Holi, which is known as the Festival of Colors, is a spring festival, which is celebrated annually in India and Nepal, by the Hindus. It falls on the day after the full moon in the month of Phalguna, early March in the English calendar.

Significance of Holi

Holi is considered a festival to welcome spring. Holi is considered as the time to rejoice, by throwing out the gloom within you as nature throws off the gloom of winter, and enjoy the day by throwing colored powders at each other. Krishna followers view Holi as a joyous festival, celebrated to imitate Lord Krishna’s play with Radha and other gopikas. Mythology suggests that Holi is celebrated in remembrance of Holika, the aunt of Prahlad.

How is Holi celebrated?

It is celebrated for 2 days or even longer in some places. On the evening of the first day there will be a public bonfire. It is lit at about 10 pm. Everyone in the neighborhood gather around the fire and enjoy by dancing, chatting and singing. The next day they enjoy by throwing Color powders and splashing color water and wish Happy Holi by hugging each other.

Holi falls on the 13th of March 2017.
