Muslims worldwide, observe fasting in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar called the Ramadan. Adult Muslims have to fast compulsorily to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran(aguidance for mankind) to Muhammad. The fast lasts for 29-30 days, during which they fast from dawn to dusk. However, adult Muslims, who is suffering from illness, those who are travelling, the elderly, pregnant women, women who are breast feeding, diabetics and women who have their menstrual cycle are exempted from fasting
While fasting, they refrain from taking food, drinking liquids, smoking and do not engage in sexual relations, from dawn to dusk. Food and water are taken before dawn and after sunset. They also refrainfrom doing sinful acts such as insulting others, cursing and lying, which they consider will reduce or negate the reward for fasting. Muslims strongly believe that spiritual rewards are multiplied by fasting during Ramadan. The number of times they offer prayers (Salat) and read the Quran is also more during this month.
The first day of the month Shawwal marks the Eid-Al-Fitr, which is celebrated in festive style and they return to their natural dispositions.
In 2017, the Ramadan month starts on May27th and ends with Eid –Al- Fitr on 24th June.
